About this course

Film International Baccalaureate Course Overview

This engaging and diverse course seamlessly blends academic principles with hands-on practical experience. The film course aims to cultivate critically independent students equipped with a comprehensive skill set for both studying and producing films, facilitating a genuine shift from film enthusiasts to proficient film scholars. Participants will proficiently analyse diverse film texts spanning various historical periods, genres, and cinematic traditions. They will adeptly apply academic frameworks, encompassing concepts and theories related to film, to deepen their interpretations and refine their theoretical knowledge. Additionally, their theoretical grasp of film will be seamlessly integrated into practical projects, fostering research, creativity, and the development of practical and technical skills.

To foster students’ analytical and creative acumen, an extensive array of films from around the world will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on applying film language through micro-analysis, delving into key concepts such as representation, ideology, audience, narrative, and institution, along with a focus on various genres. The international perspective will be enriched by studying films from different countries, particularly examining movements like Film Noir, the historical evolution of American cinema, and genres like horror. Students will also have the opportunity to delve into their own research on international and historical film contexts, ensuring the course remains both diverse and contemporary. Expressing comprehension through essay writing, video essays, and practical work will be emphasized. Practical skills in diverse production roles will be honed through film-making tasks aligned with academic analysis, such as creating a Film Noir-style short film sequence or developing a script for the opening sequence of a classical Hollywood film as a screenwriter. Instruction in scripting, storyboarding, filming, and editing will be provided using industry-standard software like Adobe Premier Pro.
