About this course
The creative media project-based course is designed for secondary students at KS3 to experiment, refine and grow their own unique creative voice. In project-based learning, students learn and develop products for real world application thought engagement with sustained and independent enquiry. PBL courses focus on: –
The course aims to develop students’ imagination, communication skills and creativity, as well as their understanding and enjoyment of the arts and media. Creative media offers you the opportunity to study a range of media practices such as debate and advertising, including video, photography, sound, animation, and digital media. There is also a focus on key skills in art and design, including: drawing and painting, printmaking, illustration, textiles, graphic design, sculpture, and architecture. Students are encouraged to follow a creative process, share their ideas and experiment with new techniques.
This course supports the development of students’ verbal, written and visual communication skills, enhancing their learning and creativity across all subjects. Students will have the opportunity to communicate for different purposes, expressing their opinions, persuading others, discussing ideas, and debating real-world issues. Students can choose to focus on one medium, develop several or integrate across the range to find their own creative voice.
Please find more information in the Art Department Materials List.
This course is taught as a series of projects, one per term (with year 3 working on smaller projects within this). Each project follows a broadly similar structure, with an introduction to the topic, collaborative planning, research, thinking and reflection stages. Teachers guide students by modelling practical techniques in art, design, and media, as well as encouraging an experimental and collaborative environment where mistakes lead to improvement, so that students can complete their project by building up a portfolio of creative work and final product.
Students receive regular feedback throughout this project-based subject on the development of skills in the following areas:
Students create work in their paper sketchbooks, as well as digitally or as 3D models, which are then compiled and digitised for online assessment. Students use a PowerPoint template provided by the teacher to submit photos of their work every two weeks for feedback on their project as a whole.
Progress is measured by both formative check points and summative assessments. Formative assessments take place regularly and in a variety of formats ranging from group discussions, class collaborations, research, analysis, quizzes, communication skills, presentations and making activities. Students complete one summative assessment each term in which they are required to share their entire project and portfolio for review including their final outcomes, products, and solutions.
