About this course
Drama is a project-based course. In project-based learning, students learn and develop products for real world application thought engagement with sustained and independent enquiry.

The KS3 drama course is designed for secondary students at KS3 to collaborate, create and grow their own unique creative voice. The course aims to develop students’ imagination, communication skills and creativity, as well as their understanding and enjoyment of drama and the arts. Drama offers the opportunity to study a range of topics and to also a focus on key skills in drama, such as freeze frames, mime, gesture, facial expressions, body language, mime, soundscape, tableau, cross-cutting, role on the wall, creating and developing a character and a plot, hot seating, monologue and duologue, writing in role, slow motion, sonomime and vocal skills. Leading drama practitioners such as Stanislavski, Laban, Boal and Brecht are taught discretely at this level. Students are encouraged to follow a creative process, work together as well as individually, share their ideas and experiment with new ones. This course supports the development of students’ verbal, written and visual communication skills, enhancing their learning and creativity across all subjects. Students will have the opportunity to communicate for different purposes, expressing their opinions, persuading others, discussing ideas, and debating real-world issues. Students can choose to contribute to activities visually, verbally or physically developing their confidence as the course progresses.
This course is taught as a series of topics each lasting for 6 weeks and in each lesson, students are encouraged to respond to various stimuli including text extracts, poetry, photographs, artwork, music, video extracts, stories and props. There is a mid-topic formative assignment and an end of topic summative assignment. Across the year these topics and their corresponding formative and summative assignments will assess the students, not only in drama skills but also across these four areas:-
Student progress is measured by both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments take place regularly and in a variety of formats ranging from group discussions and collaboration, written tasks, quizzes, presentations and performance. Students complete one summative assessment each half-term in which they are required to demonstrate their understanding of a topic by creating or analysing a text or performance.
