About this course

History

Our course:

The course follows the national curriculum at key stage 3 and aims to support students to: –

  • know and understand the history of the United Kingdom as a coherent, chronological narrative
  • know and understand significant aspects of history across the wider world
  • gain and deploy an historically grounded understanding of abstract terms such as ‘empire’ or ‘civilisation’
  • understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference, and significance
  • understand the methods of historical enquiry including sources and evidence

During years 7, 8 and 9, our students develop their knowledge and understanding by exploring distinct historical periods such as medieval history, the making of the United Kingdom 1500 – 1750, Napoleon, the French revolution, trade and industry 1750 –1900 and the 20th century world and WW1. Learning is structured to develop historical understanding and enquiry methodology across the three years.

Our course teaches students to identify significant events, make connections, draw contrasts, and analyse trends within periods and over long arcs of time.
Over time, we expect our students to use historical terms and concepts in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Student progress is measured by both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments take place regularly and in a variety of formats ranging from group discussions and collaboration, written tasks, quizzes, student enquiries and presentations. Students complete one summative assessment each half-term in which they are required to demonstrate their understanding of a topic using a range of source analysis, contrasting arguments, and interpretations.
