About this course

Science

Our course

The science course in years 7, 8 to 9 is fully integrated, allowing students to explore and develop a deeper understanding of a range of scientific ideas across the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Whilst conforming to the national curriculum requirements at key stage 3, we also take several topics further to give greater breadth and relevance.

Students are encouraged see the connections between the three disciplines of science and to relate scientific explanations to the world around them.

Starting in year 7, pupils are given some detail of all human body systems, chemical processes, techniques, movement, forces and heating. By the end of year 9, pupils will have gained a good appreciation of the fundamental concepts behind cell biochemistry, the environment, chemical reactions, atomic structure, electricity, electronics, energy, materials, light and sound. The course has been organised in a highly sequential form with one lesson following on from the other and topics revisited in later years to a greater depth.

Students demonstrate understanding and application of scientific concepts through a range of assessment activities including quizzes, topic tests, presentations, commentary, video and collaborative projects.

Student progress is measured by both formative and half-termly summative assessments with assessment objectives based around the student’s ability to ‘work scientifically’ through: –

  • Scientific attitudes
  • Experimental skills and investigations
  • Analysis & evaluation
  • Measurement
  • The preservation of historical artifacts
  • Should we bring extinct species back to life?
  • Energy resources
