Students with ADHD and learning difficulties such as dyslexia benefit from the online learning environment we offer at King’s InterHigh. Our school community is already home to many learners with Educational Health Care Plans (EHCPs) and Statements of Special Educational Needs.
With lesson recordings available to watch 24/7, students can review their past classes for extra support. Many find that this reduces the pressure to take everything in during a live lesson, and it also allows students to work through the content at their own pace.
These learners may also feel more comfortable learning from home in an environment they can control. Our digital classrooms are designed to avoid negative behaviour and disruptions, and private teacher chat options allow students to answer questions without fear of making mistakes in front of classmates.
We also offer drop-in sessions to support students in Key Stages 3 and 4 with English, Maths, and Science.
While King’s InterHigh is unfortunately unable to offer extra support to students with learning difficulties, many find that online schooling is well-suited to their style of learning. For example, with 24/7 access to lesson recordings and materials, students with learning difficulties are free to work at their own pace.
InterHigh offers a different way of learning to the traditional physical school, the online environment provided has large benefits for a learner with special educational needs. Students accessing their lessons from home, in an environment they are comfortable in and can control. We also provide firm and consistent boundaries for students who require this approach. There is no negative behaviour to interact with in an InterHigh classroom and any behaviour from the student does not impact on other learners or cause disciplinary issues for the student. The teacher can restrict student access to general chat, private chat, microphone access and indeed the classroom itself. Students are aware of these controls and therefore respond to these firm boundaries. The teacher can set questions via a Q&A pod with only the teacher seeing the responses and therefore students are not anxious in answering questions or giving opinions. InterHigh do currently offer support classes for English, Maths and Science at KS3 and 4 but these are drop-in sessions to help with current classwork and homework issues rather than special educational needs classes. InterHigh already has students with Educational Health Care Plans (EHCP’s) and Statements of Special Educational Needs (Wales) placed with us with funding provided by the Local Authority.
One of the many benefits of learning online with King’s InterHigh is that our digital platform enables teachers to tailor education to each student. We track every learner’s progress through our pupil platform, so teachers can spot students in need of additional attention before they fall behind. Plus, students can message their teachers privately during or after lessons for help.
Unlike in a traditional or mainstream school, students can also catch up on or re-watch their lessons at any time with 24/7 access to lesson recordings. This is perfect for learners who may miss lesson due to medical appointments or illness.
